He’s four!

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Tomorrow morning, bright and early, John turns 4. He is so excited. He understands what a birthday is, and that he gets presents, and that he’s a year older. He actually KNOWS that his birthday is August 26th.

We made cupcakes for him to take to daycare to celebrate. After he went to bed, David and I iced them and then decorated them with a ‘J’ or a ‘4′. I can’t wait for him to see these little cupcakes!

This past Saturday, we went to Silverwood Theme Park, which is located just outside Athol. John has been eagerly awaiting our visit as there is an authentic steam engine that you can ride. The train travels around the perimeter of the park and even gets ‘robbed’ by bandits.

John really enjoyed all the rides that he was able to go on.  He loved the airplanes and helicopters the best.

We drove some antique cars, rode the merry-go-round and went on a huge ferris wheel.

Twice we went on a ‘log’ ride which ended by climbing a steep hill and then plummeting into a bay of water.  We got soaking wet.  It was great fun for all of us.  I am sure this will be an annual event for us.  John is already looking forward to NEXT year when he will be tall enough to ride the roller coaster.  Let me tell you, this boy has NO fear!

Our backyard

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

This is our backyard. Not much grass and that’s the main reason we left our lawn tractor in Michigan. We have a small lawn mower to use if we want to, but so far we haven’t. The other reason is that we have lots of pine trees, ranging from very small to very tall, and everything in between! And it would be way too much trouble to weave in and out around them. Lots of brush. And a few wildflowers here and there. So we’re just leaving our ‘lawn’ in a natural state…..and loving it!

We’ve got a giant thermometer on a tree out there so we can see what temp we’re in for before we set foot outside.

We put caution tape around a perimeter marking Maggie’s ‘invisible fence’ so she knows where she can go and where she can’t. She actually has more yard than she did at 1054. The boundary tape comes in handy for John. He knows can run around the yard and ride his bike safely up to that point. Beyond that, the trees get really thick and even prickly. We don’t want him to get lost, and he’s currently convinced that bears live back there. No, we didn’t tell him that. He got the idea from somewhere.

We’ve taken a hike around the boundary line of our property that the previous owners marked with yellow tape around trees. There is an empty 5 acre lot behind us, with an easement in to it at the edge of our property. Neighbors told us it was previously used as a dump site, but other than an old hunting shack and a few broken down vehicles - we have yet to see any sign of life back there.

We’ve met quite a few of our neighbors…..that’s been fun. One of our neighbors brought us some elk meat that he hunted last fall. We haven’t eaten it yet. We met a family of seven ( same size as the Koyl family) up the road and now have a babysitter for John VERY close at hand!

Blessings to all!

First Day

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

We got away at 3am, into a sharp thunderstorm, but got past that after an hour. The day’s drive went well, with John and Maggie taking well to travelling.

We got into our hotel in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at 7pm after 820 miles in 16.5 hours. We did take plenty of short stops along the way to stretch and swap passengers!

It is now 6am Tuesday and we are getting ready for Day 2, heading to Billings, MT or maybe further.

Then one more day to our new home.

Hello!
